Guys, you don't UNDERSTAND: the dealers, the banks, everybody knows what's going on.

You might nail one stealer that made a mistake, but they'll close that 2nd hand shop and next week it will be renamed and be back in business.

I know for a fact that dealers pass vehicle stock around between them if they don't sell, it's a simple credit transfer to the bank that ACTUALLY owns the vehicle.

So if InspectaCar can't sell the lemon, then next week it will be at Pietie's Skedonke.

Also: it's a known FACT that dealers BUY the roadworthy certificates from certain DEKRA accredited roadworthy centers. Some vehicle don't leave the dealership floor and still pass a 100-point test.

    My advice:

    - try contact the previous owner before buying
    - verify the service history with the service center before buying (I bought a Terracan lemon and it turned out the "full service history" was falsified from stolen logbooks: Hyundai Pietermaritzburg didn't have the VIN or registration on their books)
    - pay for a full DEKRA test AND TAKE IT TO THE TEST CENTER YOURSELF WITHOUT TELLING THE DEALER WHERE IT IS GOING!!!
    - pay an independent mechanic to also have a quick look

At least I can confirm from personal experience that when you get the "unaltered" vehicle from the auction the service book, jack etc is all in the vehicle .... in our case the 96 000 km vehicle actually still had its tools in the original SEALED plastic bags !!

WOW !!! some sweeping statements .....

I am sure in many instances these may apply, but there are also some dealers actually trying to deliver an honest deal ..... maybe not that many, but there are some ....

The gent that helped me to buy directly from the auction - I KNOW how he does his business ! I know just how hard he tries to buy decent 2nd hand vehicles, he then sets about minor body repairs, mechanical repairs, and he actually takes it down for a real roadworthy. and to cover HIM, all his vehicles are then sold WITH an extended warrantee .... who knows, maybe he is just the exception to the rule ....

Not going to help. I took a dealer to the RMI, the Consumer Council even CC the bank involved. Just a few weeks ago, after almost two years and one hearing where the dealer did not pitch and case was postponed, the matter was thrown out due to the fact that they argue the vehicle was bought before April 2011, which was not the case. I bought the vehicle in June 2011 and believe me I have a solid case with proof and everything. O yes and I took the vehicle to a well-known firm for checks before I bought it. Afterwards it was pointed out that it is a code three vehicle, found out when I had to send the vehicle for repairs after the purchase, repairs which was apparently done but with poor parts and was not even fitted correctly. I trusted that my rights as a consumer was protected and I trusted the process. I did not name and shame, blow-up the dealer's premises and all the things one feel like doing. Now, I have no idea what to do... tried to contact the consumer commission, no luck of ANY response, they do not even answer their phone lines.

  11. Default Second Hand Car Trade - Stinkende Moeras

The question is: Whom at all can you trust or believe?
The world of automobiles is full of crooks.

Some years ago I bought a Honda at a dealer in Brackenfell, and I requested the dealer to take the car for an AA test. The AA certified that this vehicle had no accident.
When I opened up some of the internal coverings a couple of years later, it became clear to me that the AA certificate either was a fake, or possibly some bribe or boetie-boetie business did occur. This car definitely was smashed before and repaired, but not too professional. No qualified engineer could oversee something like this. Since that time I have absolutely no trust in the AA.

In the past I offered all my obsolete cars in private adverts. Unbelievable how many dealers want to buy cars under the condition that you do not tell any possible buyer the real mileage should anyone ever contact you. In all cases I told them all to f-off, since I do not engage myself in crime.

Miela, you are great! It is a pity there are not too many who so actively engage against crime!

Yes, exception to the rule, it is a very crooked business out there with second hand vehicles....and everybody makes money, so take the trouble and go through the hoops as suggested, it will only help you at the end of the day.

Hey Chris your experiences might vary. But I've bought enough used vehicles over the years to realise that the honest ones are few and far between and mostly end up being "muscled" out of business.

Wonderboom Inspectacar: WOW what a bunch of crooks.

A old colleague of mine, Bennie, worked there for a while. After 6 months he resigned in protest due to the SKELM stuff being done by the Dealer principal........

Just approach all deals with your bull- meter set to high and never assume anybody is honest.

Must say I also got a honest deal from a dealer when I bought my forester

Small place in Durban but everything was exactly as stated
full service history backed up with maintenance plan still left
and when I flew down (jhb to DBN) the guy took me with him to quickly go and do the road worthy so that I could go through the car with the guys doing the roadworthy
Venton from all road motors pinetown

so you do get honest dealers but on the other hand I did allot of checks before I bought since I was not trusting what the dealer said

  17. Default V Town Auto

    Hi there All,
First time I have I say here. I have had many years of close association with various Vtown Used car dealers. A long standing, and very succesfull dealer once told me .."the Used car industry is not for an Honest man"

But Quickest way to sort your guy out, send your evidence through to the Banks that Finance his deals, They will terminate their association with him.
    Good luck

How many times have we all heard a person saying "Aha, I traded in my car with the accident damage or the so and so engine hassle, and that dealer did'nt even notice it.......it's his problem now. Good for him".

    ??

........Miela, as much as I agree eith you in the above scenario, the general public is also no angel when trading in their used vehicle at a dealer.

Not always. But used dealers are also not always skelms.

I don't understand the racial slur?? Or am I missing something regarding the term "lapkop"...?

If they did modify the odo reading and sell it to some unsuspecting bloke, report it. There are channels to pursue it.

Irrespective of their race, they are dishonest. That is the issue.

    Petri I have to agree.

It is NOT the "skelm dealers" the break the engine and bend the chassis ... YES, they often do hide the fact ..... BUT the process of buying a "broken" vehicle often starts with the "honest" guy trading in his "scrap" ........

But this is not the topic of this thread - where a dealer changes an odometer .....

PS - a former neighbour, Fredi, was a 2nd hand dealer - SKELM gemors !! So I have seen BOTH sides of this trade - where an honest man tries to make an honest living, and where the "other" side does what it takes to maximize profits .... so YES, I agree, take all precautions when buying second hand.
