Google’s Chrome Web Store lists malicious Chrome apps ahead of legit extensions - johnsoneimstand

Lookup for many pop extensions on the Chrome Web Store and you'll see misleading and possibly malicious apps first. Google's Chromium-plate Web Store always lists apps in front extensions, and hucksters consume taken reward of this to antic unsuspecting users into installing fake apps instead of the extensions they're searching for. This needs to stop.

You'll always see apps low, even if they'Re fake

It's easy to demonstrate this job. Let's say you want to install a Chrome extension. You open Chrome's computer menu, point to More tools, select Extensions, and then click the Contract more extensions link at the bottom of the page. Or, you could visit the Chrome Network Store forthwith.

Whatever you search for, you'll always see ternion apps before any applicable extensions. All someone has to ut is upload an "app" with the same name and it'll always appear earlier the extension people are looking for for.

Search for Tampermonkey and the clear resultant is Tampermonkey 2022, which has a helpful review stating, "fake, don't get fooled." The second result is a web-based game titled Grepolis, and the third resolution is Google Finance. Those last two don't even make sense here.

You'll detect the Tampermonkey elongation you want in the ordinal spot, low-level Extensions. Tampermonkey, despite existence more relevant and having some more users than any of the apps in this example, will always make up in the twenty-five percent descry down.

The Chrome Web Storage's search layout pushes bad apps over honest extensions.

Search for ublock and the meridian result is uBlock Origin, but it's a fake, malicious app. For whatever reason, the second result is again an unrelated game named Dora Candy Transport, and the third result is a VPN named Gom VPN. Once more, you won't find the popular extension you're looking until the quaternary spot down.

Thankfully, the circus tent results aren't forever delusory, malevolent apps. Often, they're safe but just entirely misrelated apps, and you tranquillise undergo to CAT scan to the fourth berth for the wing you'Re looking for.

The Chrome Web Store's search often offers up just-plain-irrelevant apps, likewise.

Google should feature bettor search technology

Google is a search company, and therefore should be a master at hunt. But the Chromium-plate Web Store's seek function is lacking.

Google search knows which extensions are the most relevant—search for Tampermonkey via the main Google research engine and the extension's page on the Chrome WWW Store wish be the first result. So why is it the twenty-five percent result when you research the Chrome Web Store itself?

Google search results for

Google's main search engine works better for finding Chrome extensions than the Chromium-plate Web Lay in's does.

It's easy to guess why the Chrome Web Store workings this way. Google really wants to push its Chromium-plate app platform. But Chrome apps haven't appropriated off. There are a smattering of useful Chrome apps, just about people are just looking extensions. Google should just list the most relevant results and stop pushing its Chrome apps then firm. This will help protect Chrome users from scammers.

Microsoft took much of heat for exchangeable issues in its Windows Store. After an article I wrote more or less that went viral and public dissatisfaction with the store grew, Microsoft finally cleaned upward its act. IT's high time Google cleans awake the Chrome Web Store, too.
